(BNP Communications) — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Aug 22 evening accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of “provoking people” against Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha for his observation in the 16th constitutional amendment verdict.

“Shun the path, otherwise the consequences will not be well,” Mirza Alamgir observed while addressing a press conference at the party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka.

He said several senior leaders of the Awami League, even the prime minister, have been hitting out against the chief justice hard since the announcement of the Supreme Court verdict that annulled the controversial 16th Amendment to the Constitution.

“They (AL men) are even talking against the independence of the judiciary and threatening the chief justice to step aside from his post. This is an ominous sign for congenial political atmosphere in the country,” he added.

The country will plunge into an anarchical situation if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speaks irresponsibly while holding the responsible post of prime minister, he added.
“As a democratic political party, the BNP believes in the independence of the judiciary and its dignity,” he added.

BNP standing committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed and several central leaders of the party were present at the press conference.
